"Things that normally happen in a geologic time frame are happening during the span of a human lifetime. It's like watching the Statue of Liberty melt before your eyes."

-- Dennis Dimick, a reporter for National Geographic who writes extensively on climate change

Some insurance companies have now taken note of the impact of climate change on home owner policies. If we don't take a renewable energy path, we will be doing ourselves much harm.

I only wish I had the talent to write some children's books on this subject so that our next generation will know what they are to face because of our energy mistakes.

I would let the Big Bad Wolf represent the fossil fuels and then "renewables" could come to the rescue. Or the prince could be the climate and the wand that changed him into the frog could be fossil fuels with the princess representing the saving power of renewables.

Where are our story tellers? Dr. Seuss for renewables, anyone?

Leaping presumption that offgrid is the magor player, when 90% of systems installed in world today do not have batteries.

We also have to take into Consideration the cost/ fossil fuel consumption in making the batteries in the first place.

The reality of PHEVs in the marketplace may not be so glowing as this article suggests. the battery issues aside, PHEV owners who could be bothered to charge them would want to charge whenever and whereever they wish.

the mass of PHEV owners would use commoditized electricity from the lowest cost source. Unless renewabley generated power is cheaper than power from coal and nuclear, PHEVs en mass will substitute oil based fuels for coal-nuke fuel at probably a lower efficiency (though I'm not qualified to speak to that). good to reduce foreign oil consumption, but at the price of increased pollution and hazard from coal-nuclear?

PHEVs are fine, but the drivers don't seem to be in place for mass adoption. Better batteries, increased efficiency of module output per area at a low cost would help.

Never heard global warming - fossil fuels - and the need for action put so simply, clearly and effectively. Thanks Dennis Dimick! and Stephen. I'm quoting this in all my discussions with family and friends.

We need to get ECO-ENGINE commercialized that will use low-cost evacuated-tube thermal to about 250F at 40% - 60%+ efficiency net generated electric 220v on-site using our ECO-Cycle combined-cycle rotary self-lubricating engine to drive a 95% magnetically-coupled generator. The secret to global warming is global cooling by dynamically suspending more and more heat from solar thermal collection for water and space heating and then solar cooling and power. Ammonia is an amazing replacement for steam at half the temperature...
