450-Home Housing Development to Feature Solar Systems

Roseville, California [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] The Sacramento division of the national builder, Lennar, announced a partnership with PowerLight Corporation and Roseville Electric to build what it is calling the nation's largest solar community, which will integrate photovoltaic (PV) systems and upgraded energy efficiency measures into 450 new homes slated to be built in Roseville over the next two years. Lennar operates locally as Renaissance Homes and Winncrest Homes.

The PowerLight SunTile solar electric system will be installed as a standard feature on each home. PowerLight's SunTile is a roof-integrated technology, blending seamlessly into the homes' design.

"With these attractive solar communities in Roseville, Lennar and Roseville Electric are demonstrating real environmental leadership, and providing their customers with tremendous savings on their utility bills," said Howard Wenger, Executive Vice President of PowerLight.

The benefits of this solar community include significant utility bill reductions for Lennar customers, and the generation of completely emissions-free electricity. Buyers of these solar-powered Lennar homes may qualify for a $2,000 tax credit through 2007.

By producing clean, renewable electricity, the solar community will reduce CO2 emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels -- equivalent to planting more than 65 acres of trees, and not burning 57,000 barrels of oil.

This is great news for a town that is local to me. However, as encouraging as it is to have a 'solar electric neighborhood', why are we neglecting utilizing solar thermal systems? Both domestic water and pool/spa systems are arguably the most cost effective uses of solar energy. PV's are higher tech and higher priced.
If nothing else, why not a mix of solar & renewable energy disciplines; thermal, pv's and conservation measures?

We need more rebates from power companies, state and federal levels for local builders. Buyers are getting smater but still have a hard time accepting a 40 or 50 thousand added expence for photovoltaic and Solar hot water. I think we will see a real change in the way homes are powered in the comming years. The oil companies should be made to invest a percentage of there profits in renewable engery if they won't do on there own. Shame on them.
