"The EID micrcogrid approach recognizes there are clear benefits to taking the same spatial "foot print" where excessive area- and time- specific costs occur and installing a source of environmentally benign, high quality micro generation."

Energy for society - electricity, heat and vehicle fuel
Biogas can be used to power conventional gas or diesel engines driving electricity generators and to fuel boilers in commercial environments. Biogas can be treated, compressed and used as a vehicle fuel in the same way as CNG (compressed natural gas).

Energy for soil organisms - in organic structures in biofertilisers
Biofertilisers will contain most of the plant nutrients and of course part of the bioenergy (energy for growth) from raw material. Both the nutrients and the bioenergy in biofertilisers are very important for microorganisms in cultivated soils and thus for soil fertility and productivity. Biofertilisers can reduce soil degradation by increased amount of humus and also increase carbon sequestration, improve damaged soils, increase water holding capacity and prevent some soils from wind erosion.

Energy for humans - food produced on cultivated soils. We want safe food i.e. without man made chemicals!

Biological conversion in local, closed systems that uses advanced technology can positively affect all three dimensions of sustainability - ecological, economical and social. Utilisation of bioenergy in biomass and renewable organic matter in solid and liquid waste, residues and fuel crops is one approach to moving our economy to a more sustainable basis by moving us away from fossil fuels and increasing energy efficiency as well as nutrients recycling. It also implies several important benefits such as bringing about a better global environment as well as promoting local business development, job creation, better working and total environment and improved social cohesion. We have to use the knowledge from several disciplines for creating a novel system for efficient bioconversion of biomass and of renewable organic matter into energy rich methane in biogas and into biofertilisers. This system will have high flexibility and reduce surface area and volume required for bioconversion.

I think Guy Warner's suggestions on EDI micro-grids should be carefully examined by the engineering community. We have to make positive adjustments to our power system as time goes by and this seems to be a good option. It makes good sense to be able to control power to a specific area in order to provide end consumers power continuity.

The microgrid and local power generation make sense not only for local businesses but for homes as well. A home which powers itself uses a grid no greater than the line from the wind turbine or PV system, plus the house circuitry. If this home system also produces one-third excess power for the national energy commonwealth, and 20 million more homes do likewise, then we will have come a long way to achieve secure, benign national energy. And if some of the many trillions to be spent on the new energy paradigm of the post-petroleum age is paid to individual citizens for home power-plant construction and excess power purchase, then we will distribute not only power generation but wealth as well, and where it will do great good. And a home power-plant helps secure the owners in their old age with free energy and energy-sale income.
