Shelburne Farms is committed to switching to renewable sources of energy, and producing as much of that energy as possible on the farm. Grass energy, he said, could conceivably replace the 20,000 gallons of propane and 24,000 gallons of fuel oil currently used annually for heating, as well as a significant portion of approximately 675,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity.

Golf Course Turf Management Departments throw away clippings on a daily basis. The clippings are rich in nutrients and perhaps there is an opportunity for recycling.

Jullian: That might be a possibility but I'd wager that the heat from pelletizing and the loss of liquid in the process might well destroy most of the vitamins and other phytonutrients. I'd be glad just to be able to cut all the reed canary grass on our place and use it to heat my house.

There is always the opportunity, of course, of using the pellitiser earlier in the year, to pelletise grass for animal consumption in place of hay/haylage during winter, as being compressed, it would take up much less space in storage. liquid from the compression process could be put straight back on the field, as a totally 100% natural liquid feed.
