In addition to being a clean, efficient and renewable fuel source, Miscanthus is easy to grow. Upon reaching maturity, Miscanthus has few needs as it outgrows weeds, requires little water and minimal fertilizer and thrives in untilled fields, Heaton said, where various wildlife species make their homes in the plant's leafy canopy and surrounding undisturbed soil.

I would like to know more about the BTU ratio per acre and how long it takes to fully mature. This may be a great fuel for home heating and power generation.
How hard is it to regermanate each year?

This program is showing progress from the visit I made with them nearly a year ago. To one factor that one has to be careful with is how far it might be transported to get it to a facility that can convert it to electricity. Using it in power plants isn't likley due to the transport distances, so that opens up the potential for small scale localized power generation systems. This would apply to corn stover, wheat straw and other crop residues.

Why not use corn stalks like thy plan to use that grass instead of just burning it strait to get nutrients into the soil. They could use the ash from the corn after it had been burned in the reactor instead. if they will grow plants just to burn for energy, than why don't they burn parts of the plants that they would have grown anyway for energy?

I would like to respond to Mr. Bauer. I would be concerned for air quality if thousands of people started burning anything at home other than a very clean fuel such as natural gas. I would suggest that this might be a good option to burn in a power plant to produce electricity, and have the homeowner heat their house with a heat pump, either air source in a temperate climate, or geothermal in a colder climate. I heat my house in a Minneapolis suburb with a geothermal heat pump and I am very satisfied with it.

Thank you Mr. Stenswick, I am in Michigan and there is not much geothermal that is around here.
Enginered Machine Products (EMP) is the only one in are area that has such a system. Some times its not enough to heat or cool most of the year, but does cut down on there use of energy for the most part.
There are a few people that burn wood in are area. I was looking for other means of sources of energy that could take its place.

Replying to Mr. Bauer again. I too have heard of people who had problems with heat pumps, but that is faulty design/installation. I have a 4 br, 3 ba house heated by a forced air heat pump. It keeps my house at 68-70 all winter, at a reasonable price, and I buy all of my electricity from our local utilities wind program, so I like to claim I heat my house and put nothing into the atmosphere.

So where does one obtain rhizomes for this grass?

does the cost of Miscanthus come close to that of coal?
