Cape Wind Secures Power Interconnection

Boston, Massachusetts [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Good news for the future of the first proposed offshore wind power project in the US: The manager of the New England electric grid, the Independent System Operator of New England (ISO-NE), has approved, with conditions, Cape Wind's plan to interconnect the proposed offshore wind farm with the electric transmission system in New England.

"This represents another major milestone in Cape Wind's efforts to deliver clean and affordable renewable energy to citizens of Massachusetts."

"After more than three years of rigorous analysis and study, the New England Power Pool Reliability Committee voted unanimously to recommend approval of the connection of Cape Wind's electric transmission line to the grid," said Cape Wind President Jim Gordon. "This represents another major milestone in Cape Wind's efforts to deliver clean and affordable renewable energy to citizens of Massachusetts."

The formal notification came down on October 6, 2005. Cape Wind is continuing to undergo a permitting review by 17 federal and state agencies that began in November 2001.

At peak output Cape Wind's 420 MW offshore wind farm on Horseshoe Shoal would provide three-quarters of the electricity used on Cape Cod.

It has been reported there is enough power available from offshore wind capacity to power the entire united states electrical demand. On a more practical note, this is a project which has seen many delays most of them phychological rather than technical as is usually the case. Keep the Ball rolling!

This approval has been a long time coming, and of course it remains to be seen if all other hurdles to Cape Wind's plan will be overcome. As a Cape Cod summer resident and catboat sailor, I am not thrilled by the prospect of the horizon being interrupted by such a project. However, it is time for New England to set the pace for offshore energy use that gets beyond petroleum and natural gas industry pumping platforms that are already offshore in the Gulf and which affected the U.S. economy so severely. Wind energy's time has come. No more whining, let's do it!

They say that mostly the old and rich oppose it... (a local poll) But when I'm old and lacking of oil, I'll promote offshore wind even more!
