"Concerns are compounded by the fact that the regulation of wind power varies from location to location and some state and local regulatory agencies we reviewed generally had little experience or expertise in addressing the environmental and wildlife impacts from wind power."

Hook up a sonic whistle on the turbine blades to scare the bats and birds away from there?

Sonic whistles make sense, but on a wind farm with a dozen or more windmills and thirty six blades all whistling away maybe there could be a difference in frequencies to allow the sensitive bat receptors to differentiate their directions and distances.

I'm not a bat person. Just a thought.

C'mon - look at who requested the GAO report in the first place! This isn't about the birds and the bats, this is about diparaging wind power and providing an avenue for increased federal oversight (i.e., delaying turbine installation projects) to protect coal interests.

Ya know, you might be onto something, Mr. Inman. http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/infosheets/coalproduction.htm
I spent 5 years in a mine in Utah, and coal companies are short sighted enough to 'protect' their own sandbox. I say short sighted, because 1. Wind power isn't that much of a threat, and 2. The same utilities using coal would benefit from the 'greening' of their industry, even to such a small degree. Wind power needs to get a lil hot air flowing, to show that it also provides jobs, because to some politico's..the only green they see, is money.
