"Depending on location, a 100-watt solar panel will save 2,000-3,000 gallons of water over the 25-year warrantee life of the panel."

This is a well written and informative article. Mr. Brown has made clear the inseparable linkages between water and energy conservation, and our complete dependence on ecologically congruous (truly sustainable) use.

Junaid,

See the following link for water use per kWh.

"What a piece of work is man...
I have of late--but eherefore I know not--lost all my mirth,
This goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory,
This most excellent canopy, the air, look you..
This brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof, fretted with golden fire
Why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours" He should have seen what we have done to this "goodly frame"

I'm interested in having a reference/citation for the statistic relating to gallons/kWh. Thanks.

I am annoyed with this article because the title seems to promise information about water being made available around the world by renewable energy technologies. Yet there is no information like that in the article. It only promises that it "could" happen. Why not write about places where it DOES happen? I have heard that solar panels are being used in Africa to heat water and purify it for drinking, solar ovens are being used to cook food, etc.

What can we do to stop the fossil and other electricity generating plants from cropping up all over the world? Where is the national and international campaign for more solar and wind energy investment?

What about point of use hot water heaters?

Approx 80 BILLION GALLONS of fresh water is used in the U.S. every year waitng for the water from the tap to go from cold to hot.

Where's the water? Results of a study published in the July 30, 2005 issue of The Economist reports that "trees in arid and semi-arid areas (such as in the western U.S.) consume far more water than they trap." Researchers from the University of Newcastle and the Free University of Amsterdam conclude that too many trees growing in dry lands devastate watershed, exacerbate drought cycles, cause irreparable damage to flora and fauna, and release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The USDA indicates that the U.S. has 37% more woody biomass plants today than in 1900, and each tree consumes 5 to 300 gallons of water daily.
Biomass use in distributed and sustainable small business platforms is the American Green Revolution. The sensible reduction of woody plants to restore safe and adequate water supplies for trees, birds and animals, agriculture, urban and rural populations is a powerful key to water sustainability, and reduction of housing and energy costs.
