For proper evaluation, a product's energy balance must be compared with that of the product it replaces.

I would like to offer a brief comment on each of Dr. Wang's four main points on energy balance and ethanol.

1st] Dr. Wang's first point is correct without needing anything more than the addion of the word "entire" just ahead of the word energy in the following "a product's energy balance must be compared with that of the product it replaces."

2nd] This statement sounds like Dr. Wang is implying something he is uncomfortable in coming right out and saying. Why didn't he come right out and say Compared to gasoline, any type of fuel ethanol substantially reduces fossil energy and petroleum use? Instead he adds the word "helps" which tends to cloud the statement such that it doesn't say anything noteworth.

3rd] I think this statement should read; Ethanol produced from corn can achieve very minor reductions in greenhouse gas emissions when all inputs and outputs are considered.

4th] The last point I believe is unequivocally correct.
