Oklahoma Utility Supports Growth of New Wind Project

Weatherford, Oklahoma [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Commercial operations barely begun, and already FPL Energy is looking to expand the 106.5 MW Weatherford Wind Energy Center in Oklahoma by an additional 40.5 MW. FPL Energy entered into an agreement with Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) to purchase the entire output from the expansion under a long-term contract.

Mike O'Sullivan, senior vice president of development for FPL Energy, said, "We applaud the commitment of PSO to clean, renewable wind energy. We appreciate the support we have received from our customer, the city of Weatherford, and the surrounding community on making this project and its expansion a reality."
FPL Energy and PSO have an existing power purchase agreement for the total output of the Weatherford project. The 40.5 MW expansion will be comprised of 27 wind turbines rated at 1.5 MW apiece, and will be located on approximately 1,400 acres southeast of the original project site. Construction on the expansion will begin in the near future and should be complete by the end of 2005. FPL Energy has completed 220.5 MW of new wind projects in 2005 including the Weatherford site, and has announced an additional 261 MW that are expected to reach commercial operation by the end of the year.

With initiual output already sold out and the obvious need for more capacity for cleanly produced power at this installation, it's not hard to separate truth from fiction (or at least perceiver myopia and/or negative press) here. GO FPL !!!
