Sen. Obama Pushes for Ethanol Growth

April 27, 2005  |  13 Comments

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama from Illinois has proposed legislation to provide a tax credit that will benefit the construction of E85 ethanol fueling stations throughout the country.

This proposal would encourage the use of more ethanol and help to provide motorists who drive flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) with a cheaper gas. "For too long our country has relied too heavily on foreign oil to fuel its energy needs, and American consumers are paying an increasingly heavy price for their lawmakers' inability to address this problem," said Obama. "If you turn on the news, you can see that our dependence on foreign oil is keeping us tied to one of the most dangerous and unstable regions in the world. And if you pull into most service stations around the country and want to fill up your tank, you will pay some of the highest gas prices of all time." The legislation would provide a 50 percent tax credit for the cost of building a new E85 vehicle refueling facility, with a credit limit up to $30,000. Funds from penalties on auto manufacturers that violate fuel mileage standards would pay for the tax credit. Mileage standard penalties are assessed by the National Highway Safety Administration. E85 contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. It is a cleaner burning renewable fuel made from corn and is appropriate for use in designated FFVs, which can also use unleaded fuel when E85 isn't available. Standard vehicles can burn fuel with a 10 percent ethanol mix. There are currently 3.5 million FFVs on the road throughout the United States, according to Obama, and vehicle manufacturers are expected to expand production of Flexible Fuel Vehicles when more fueling stations offer E85. Nationwide there are more than 180,000 gas stations all over America, but only about 400 carry E85. Illinois is home to approximately 20 gas stations that have the capability of offering E85. "We should all be proud of Governor Blagojevich for leading the way on E85 here in Illinois," Obama said. "It is time for the Federal government to join this important cause -- not only for our farmers, our ethanol producers and our environment, but to restore our country's control of its energy future."

Is there a small car/vehicle that utilizes e85fuel? All I could find were trucks. And is there a future for converting non-flexifuel vehicles to e85 use?

Sirs,
I cant tell everyone how thrilled I am to not only witness, but, actually partisipate in the return to sanity our country is experiencing. While it is true that blatant greed and indifference to the effects of fossil fuels on the environment is a mittigating factor in big oils downfall, I do believe if the internet had been as prolific in the 70s as it is today we, America, would have retuned to an agricultural based economy back then. This would not only have had the beneficial effects of a cleaner, greener environment, it would also have deminished our enemies ability to do us harm. Without the income from oil reserves, which we helped develop then became the biggest buyer of, what would they have to export?

I've been using E85 for about two months now. I have seen a reduction in fuel mileage from about 15.5 to 13.0 mpg (unleaded vrs E85). However with unleaded at $2.10/gal and E85 at $1.56/gal my fuel cost per mile has declined. Unleaded will have to drop to about $1.90/gal with E85 staying at $1.56/gal before E85 will raise my cost per mile above unleaded. I can notice no difference in vehicle performance. Lets see - 1/3 less polution, renewable resource, no change in vehicle performance, cost less per mile, available now - looks like a winner to me.

To Allen Gordon;

The lastest research studies by the U. S. Department of Agriculture show that ethanol is energy positive. For every BTU of energy that is used to plant and harvest corn, and all of the other energy inputs of any type whatsoever, one BTU of input energy per gallon equals 1.67 BTUs of ethanol energy.

With the newest technology in modern ethanol plants, ethanol has much more energy that is required to produce it.

The only way we can acheive these goals is to impeach Bush and Chaney from office. This can be done by proving that the pentagon was hit by a missle and not by a 757 jet as told to us by those now in power. Read Painful Questions An analysis of the September 11th attack by Eric Hufschmid.

Hey allen. if E85 or B80 was used to plant and harvest the corn or other crops then not much petrolium based fuels are needed.
Stop thinking in terms of only one helping one aspect of the ecconomy and markets. The technology exists today to make the US totally independant of foreign oil if the Sheeple will let their views be known.

And how much petrolium based fuels are necessary to plant and harvest all the corn required to produce sufficient ethanol? Not to mention the energy required to extract the ethanol from the corn. Where are the economies here?

At last! A proposal which will move the U. S. toward significantly greater energy independence.

Senator Obama has proposed the single most important solution to providing ethanol for consumers, which is the placement of E-85 pumps at gas stations nation wide.

When Obama's solution is implemented, it will be better for the enviornment, the economy, the trade deficit, and every single local, state, and national policy.

The sole thing that is keeping America from all of these benefits is the current lack of a nationwide distribution system of getting E-85 to the consumer, and Senator Obama has the solution to this problem!

I salute you guys. This is the silver bullet for the economy, the ecology, automobile manufacturers, and the farmer. Ethanol was proven years ago in Brazil, and it is obvious that big oil has squelched its use in this country. MTBE producers step aside and let the MOON SHINE in!

Wow, E85 is getting hot in Illinois and elsewhere! The pace of E85 growth in Minnesota is torid as well. Use of a cleaner-burning alternative to gasoline is music to our ears at the American Lung Association of Minnesota.

We discuss E85 frequently on our blog:

We also have a lot on the fuel on our website: www.CleanAirChoice.org
