"As a solar energy supporter who's recently installed a solar array at my winery, it was the logical next step to recommend to my Wine Co-op colleagues that they purchase a solar electric system."

The article says "will generate enough electricity during the day for 400 homes". The EIA reports the average CA home consumes 18.5 kWh/day, so 400 homes would need 7,400 kWh/day. The 424 kW PV system only generates power about 5 full hours per day, or 2,100 kWh/day, so what gives?

With regard to the paragraph in question, a spokeswoman for PowerLight said the company is "very careful to say 'during the day' NOT during a 24 hour period."

In other words, the figures are tailored to more closely compare the system's output with a typical home's energy needs during similar daytime hours.

So many variables.

I would love to hear more information on the types of solar panels, support for the arrays and costs---information which has been carefully avoided.

Well as far as the costs, I agree the figures might not be what every consuming amercan wants to have at their disposal, but if you were to think about what americans are going to be consuming in regards to the economic times we are facing and what the true costs of energy are, I think this is an incredible thing that the wine country folks are doing!! Good Job!!
As far as the cost of the equipment, it takes a child to google the most recent prices on the net....somewhere between $4-$6 a watt or if you get a pro to install a system it comes out to be around $8-$10 a watt.
And as for your previous critical comments I tend to think that your president could do the math in a way so that you have what you want to see.
