"In the past, the two major barriers to renewable energy powered infrastructures in remote areas have been the high up-front capital cost and the difficulties ensuring the system is maintained on an ongoing basis."

Reverse Osmosis process is very expensive, UV method of water purification will be much less expensive for large volume of drinking water requirement. Why UV process has not been used, because of desalination process is required? Can you please let me know the complete process. In India, we need water purification in rural areas, this may help, if we can implement this system.

The RO system has been the primary choice but many years in is electrical energy intensive. But with solar as the primary input why isn't flash distillation more cost effective? I have heard of a few of these systems in the past but no news lately.
thanks

Solar distillation of contaminated water or soil moisture may be used as emergency small quantity source. The technique is used by small plastic solar stills used by yachts.
A clear plastic sheet is laid across a shallow sunlit pit dug in the soil. Condensation on the lower surface drips into a bowl in the centre of the pit. Time must be allowed for the water to cool. The sheet needs to be weighted down outside the pit, and to be kept clear of the soil at the pit edges by a circle of rope or stones. This method which was demonstrated in the Maldives in 1966 is effective even in deserts and needs little more than the piece of clear plastic.
Hope this is useful to someone
