Why do you have to transport energy long distances if you make everybody, everyhouse, everybusiness a producer/buyer of energy somehow than you do need so much of what you say. Also terrorism cannot effect so much if attacked to the main transport energy line.

Renewable Energy can only become a truly useful part of our society when the parallel technology transmission grid is updated/upgraded at the same time.

The technology has existed since the early 1980's to transmit electricity cost-effectively over 7000 km (4000 miles and growing).

This must be known everywhere by transmission system planners and consumers so that they can both take full advantage of the new renewable technologies installed within that radius of the point of demand. (By the way, my AAA map says a drive from Portland, Maine to San Diego, California is less than 3200 miles on the Interstate)

Like what happened with the Interstate Highway system, the national electricity grid must built to handle large scale wheeling (moving electricity across local, state, and national boundaries).

Many of the brownout/blackouts that happened in California since 2000 were due to transmission systems that couldn't handle the long distance wheeling loads from B.C.(Canada), Washington, and Oregon sent south to Southern California.

How many of our most polluting power plants could we shut down if we transported electricity across time zones instead of coal, oil, or natural gas?

Solar Thermal, which provides the most efficient use of the sun's energy (3-4 times more efficient than electric), is also the most neglected by the US government and big business, relating to renewable energy. Homeowners and businesses can use it directly and don't need government sanction or grid connection to heat their homes, make hot water, heat their pools and cook their food.

Solar Thermal products are much more affordable and easy to use, but few people are aware they exist. It should be addressed at the Phase II conference because Europe, Asia and even Australia are more progessive than oil-hungry USA and have made great strides in product development and sales.
Many quality domestic solar thermal products are available now and have been discovered and are being used by cash-starved consumers. But the numbers are still small and with more awareness and promotion by ACORE, the state and federal governments, we can reduce conventional fuel dependence and lower utility costs while improving the environment.

I have invented a new drilling method and heat recovery system to bring heat from, "Hot Dry Rock" up to 10 miles deep, under any existing power plant. It can convert them to geothermal, however I need help to develop it. See it at the USPTO # 6,626,249 B2.

Ergun, I have designed a series of VAWTs +
a Transmission System, that will have none
of the inherent problems, of current tech.
It will not reguire an expensive and wastefull infrastructure. Transmission loss alone is 50% or more. Sited, from single use, to cluster, hybrid, optimal adaptation,
to site conditions, can utilize, old, recycled or new components. I need Seed Money, to build working prototype. More to your email. look for it "New VAWTs + System."

Every home that is purchased or refinanced should be given the opportunity to retro-fit energy efficiency measures like installing low e-windows, up-grade HVAC, upgrade insulation in walls/ceiling and repair ducts that need to be sealed. The buyer should also have the opportunity to include solar for the balance of energy they need to run their home. Taking these measures on at the time of new financing will distribute the cost over the life of the loan. This self debt-servicing method allows the occupant of the home or building to match monthly utility cost with debt service for the installing cost and at the end of the loan you get free energy. This is the same principal as buying a home and paying it off in 30 years. It sure beats paying rent or in this case the never ending utility bill.

Only about 40 years of oil are left and the clock is ticking...what are the substitutes? Gas and coal? Nuclear power? Hydrogen?

The energy mix is more important than ever.

And it starts with each individual - Does everyone out there drive a gas efficient car?
Do you use metro buses or car pools? Do you separate your garbage?

Just by being more aware and energy efficient we could easily save one third of our total energy - but does this remind you of those Sunday church goers?

Are you interested in offsetting your Co2 emissions when you take the plane?

One of the problems is that the last 30plus years of RD in RE resulted in great technologies, but without a wider use and utilization of them they will not be suitable to become adequate substitutes. Phase II is important but overdue. We cannot afford to wait until the federal government commits itself to Kyoto and a change in energy policy. Think about a clash of Schwarzenegger vs. Bush - that is the spice we need. Russia will sign Kyoto - what does this mean to US RE manufacturers? Yes, there are many great ideas and sophisticated technologies - we should also look at it from an educationa angle - our kids will never ever inherit our riches they will get what is left over.
