Back in 2010, co-founders Michael Sharber and Patrick McCabe could be found freelancing solar system design, while living in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Acting on a hunch, they wired up a 2004 Saturn L300 fully equipped with an extra battery, inverter, internet, and 2 flat screen monitors. With their mobile office in place, they then proceeded to go on a 45 day road trip all around the US, while still providing high quality alternative energy design support to their clients….from a 4 door sedan!
After landing in Detroit, they began to formulate this concept of remote alternative energy design into the business that eventually became GreenLancer. Shortly thereafter they met partner Doug Elbinger who was instrumental in helping the company layout a road map to success. This venture quickly gained attention in the startup scene after getting accepted into Dan Gilbert’s non-profit accelerator program Bizdom and officially becoming part of the Quicken Loans Family of Companies.
Taking its cue from the “two guys in a sedan”, GreenLancer has evolved into a virtual network of alternative energy experts who design solar energy systems, in the cloud. The company’s “post-industrial” business model leverages technology with a freelance workforce to make design support very quick, easy, affordable, and accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. What GreenLancer has done is taken conventional solar design services and turned them into technical documents contractors can order online. This provides customers with the ability to know exactly what they’re going to get, when they’re going to get it, and how much it’s going to cost before they ever commit to the order.
GreenLancer’s online platform is providing the next generation of solar design services and significantly reducing the 'soft costs' associated with developing alternative energy projects. Their standardized processes and systematic workflows have resulted in virtual assembly lines that disrupt conventional workflow, the same way Henry Ford’s assembly line forever changed the world of manufacturing. GreenLancer has proven their model works and by doing so, the company has provided design support to clients all over the United States, 6 countries, across 4 continents!
