Aspen, Colo Sept 6, 2011 The 2011 AREDAY Summit completed a four day run this past August 18 – 21 at the Jerome Hotel in Aspen Colorado. Cutting-edge information on how to move the United States into a profitable era of renewable energy and climate change solutions exchanged hands between leaders from business, government, military, scientific and non-profit sectors.
Vice-Admiral Dennis McGinn was visibly moved when he spoke about our oil dependence, "We are paying too high a price- economically, environmentally and with human lives."
Excitement brewed among attendees, as small emerging businesses had the opportunity to network with environmental powerhouses and pioneers such as Ted Turner, Lester Brown, Hunter Lovins, Heidi Cullen and nearly 100 others around opportunities for financial and technological success in new and emerging areas. According to many of the speakers including Jigar Shah, CEO of the Carbon War Room, climate change and renewable energy solutions present the greatest wealth creating opportunities in history. It became very clear to participants that this is there is no shortage of money to power a new renewable energy economy.
US dependence on foreign oil was a major topic of discussion, with T. Boone Pickens stating, “We have gone 40 years without a plan. It is time for a plan.” General Wesley Clark shared ideas and critical insights as well as his personal passion, “My passion is to help America become independent of foreign oil.” Vice-Admiral Dennis McGinn was visibly moved when he stated, “We are paying too high a price- economically,. environmentally and with human lives.”
All seemed to agree that if subsidies and tax breaks were lifted, renewable energy technologies could effectively compete with the oil and gas industry.
According to Ted Turner, there is a decided lack of leadership when it comes to reducing national carbon emissions. In-depth discussions occurred around the critical role that clean energy solutions can play in national security. The overriding theme of how to move forward was encapsulated by General Clark when he said, “Every segment has its own story. But we have to work together to find solutions.”
