Don't Miss The Great Solar Debate: Where Does the Global Solar Industry Stand? ×

Solar Industry Hasn't Forgotten Obama's Promise to Put Solar on White House

It’s a well-known story in the renewable energy scene: President Carter installed solar panels on the White House in 1979, and just seven short years later, his successor President Reagan removed them.

It’s been more than 20 years since a U.S. President displayed solar on the famous roof, but in 2010 President Obama gave solar advocates some hope: he pledged to install solar on the White House by the spring of 2011.

“This project reflects President Obama’s strong commitment to U.S. leadership in solar energy and the jobs it will create here at home,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu at the time of the announcement. “Deploying solar energy technologies across the country will help America lead the global economy for years to come.”

Despite the apparent enthusiasm, time passed, and soon the spring deadline turned to summer, summer to fall, fall to winter…and today, there are still no panels to be seen.

Not an industry that forgets easily, solar supporters have not given up on Obama’s promise. Since 2010, industry advocates have called on the President to follow through on his pledge, from Vote Solar’s initiative to Solar Fred’s memo.

And now after Obama’s re-election, Sungevity has started a petition to get solar back on the roof of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Danny Kennedy, president of Sungevity, continues his fight for a “Rooftop Revolution” with a new video that portrays the Obama’s dog Bo with solar on his dog house, celebrating the inauguration. Check out the video below:

Says Kennedy:  “If solar is good enough for Bo’s house, isn’t it good enough for the White House?”
