Germany is installing solar at $2/watt average which includes a very large amount of residential rooftop. That means that their large scale installation were like well below $2/watt.

The US is installing utility scale solar at $2.40/watt. (Greentech Media 3rd qtr 2012 report)

That difference of $0.40 is 17% of the current US $2.40/watt. It pretty much makes up the loss of a 20% PTC subsidy. All we have to do in the next three years is get as efficient as the Germans were a year ago.

And we'll be helped by the continuing fall in panel prices along with likely efficiency increases.

A question, Josh.

Is there a future for utility-owned solar? (Or independently owned large array solar?)

If we were installing rooftop solar as cheaply as the Germans the non-subsidized price of solar would be extremely attractive to end-users.

End-users, with net metering plans, are likely to install a lot of solar, send their excess daytime solar to the grid, and take back cheap off-peak electricity.

Can utility scale solar compete with off-peak wholesale electricity prices or is it likely to get crowded out by end-user production?
