We're exiting the era in which someone could go into a neighborhood, do a crappy job/rip customers off, and move on to a new set of suckers in a different neighborhood.

Keep your eye on sites like Angie's List where misdeeds get logged for eternity.

I agree with Tor. Trust is the foundation to communicating a value proposition. Ask a salesperson why they lost a deal and most will say it was because they weren't the lowest price. Ask a buyer why the chose a contractor and overwhelmingly the first thing most say is 'they weren't the lowest price.'

Building trust is very important to me and my company. Hate to say it, though: I see installations by others occasionally that shouldn't inspire trust, whether by quality of installation or design or price. And yet they get sales -- and obviously sales that I don't, and don't even get the chance to bid on. I guess that suggests patience, maybe better marketing, not a change in strategy.
