This is not the normal subject matter for a RussTech blog, but it seems important enough to warrant wide dissemination.
The March 2012 issue of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists contains an article on the real threat posed by huge stockpiles of chemical and biological agents in Syria that would be almost impossible to safeguard in the event of further political upheaval in that country. The article, which was written by Charles P. Blair, is entitled “Fearful of a Nuclear Iran? The Real WMD Nightmare is Syria.”
Mr. Blair is a Federation of American Scientists Senior Fellow on State and Non-State Threats. He writes that the international community should focus on Syria's weapons of mass destruction. Syria has one of the most sophisticated chemical weapons programs in the world, and it is suspected that they have an active biological weapons program.
