Very interesting, and much needed. Another example of a US-based bond-like green investment is Renewable Energy Investment Notes (REIN), offered by the Boston-based nonprofit that I work for called New Generation Energy.

The model is a little different, because REIN purchases fund loans to small businesses for solar and efficiency projects, but its a proven model for community financing that works. You can go to www.newgenerationenergy.org if you want to learn more.

This seems like an excellent way to finance community solar power and allow profit sharing to the community. These local solar additions remove some of the need for new large scale facilities and the transmission lines that go with them. This also gives those who are not able to install their own systems a way to get involved. Local cooperatives could be set up to achieve the same thing in the absence of government plans.
