Finally, the solar industry is heading into main stream advertising and event PR.

I always knew it would come down to TV appearances for solar to catch on mainstream. As another poster mentioned on another blog, seeing solar in the backround on any tv show would help promote the technology.
It is there if you look, it's been on every clip of space news involving satellites and space stations and it has made it into a few episodes of your favorite home renovation programs. Spielberg seems to be getting solar into the shots in most of his latest stuff. (I once sent him a note years ago regarding adding solar into the movies)
Using the brainwashing techniques that television offers it is definately the way to get solar into the mainstream. Then when it starts coming into the dialog, it should hopefully start to sink in. Could you imagine if some desperate housewife said she had to go do laundry while the sun was still out to take advantage of her free hot water! What a stir that would make in the households of America.

Unfortunately, as many people become 'jumping up joyful' about the solar ads for 'big solar', the government is moving more toward allowing adoption of ITC's and grants to large corporation projects and will serve to limit the incentives to true distributed solar energy; the type the average homeowner might install, like employing actual production incentives for solar energy. Surely, one can assume that solar energy adoption of any type is a good thing, but if the only way the majority can see it is through their ongoing utility or other commodity bills, then the true benefits of what should be 'distributed energy' are finally monopolized.

Why not offer Solar systems to those that want them during one of these events? If you can affort $100,000 commercials, you can afford to offer 4 systems that offer 5 Kwh of power to four lucky winners...Then you'd see a better success, since when you make AMericans winners of a system installed on their roofs, you make local spokespeople of them and they will be more than glad to tell the USA they have ALL their power paid for with their systems, every week, and also, even get credits for the excess power they make each month! Then, what will people believe about solar? If the nation's solar power companies want to put their power where their claims are, they will show America they can overcome their dependence on electrical companies, and on foreign oil! Get Boone Pickens to sponsor half of the cost and let him tell the USA about his plan, that includes solar and natural gas run vehicles, saving not only American jobs, but making it possible to say "NO!" to foreign oil imports!

I hate to admit it, but Solar Bowl is a good theme. As soon as Solar hits sports, the general population will know it is real. As if sports is as real as Water and Renewable Power. I am a Wet head, I think life exists because of Water! not Sports. But, those who think Sports rule the World out number those who think the Sun knows best.....get it?

Phil-M You are entirely right! If Solar for residential doesn't pick up soon, the owner class with the enormous dollar capacities will steal the one and best benefit that solar offers the individual owner of solar, and that is independence!!!! Imagine having to chose from rented solar power and rented fossil fuel! It is the absolute and most potentially damaging thing that could happen to green energy, and yet, large corporations with big money could stick it to us, the residential customer, by robbing us our rights to solar freedom. Already large utility companies have preempted wind energy proponents by offering green wind energy distributed power at MORE than its retail value!!!! So in effect, they believe that citizens should offer utilities the ability to make a profit well above the costs of developing and distributing wind energy farms! It is remarkable, but it has worked, since people want wind versus coal fired plants, and are oddly willing to spend more to make that a reality, even though they are in effect, making the investors of the utility very rich, and are losing the very thing they really want, which is energy independence! What an amazing phenomena! But it is happening, because solar has not made it possible for the average homeowner to get the financing instrument they need to make solar affordable for their home and family. So, if solar can find a way to create a 4% interest loan for 10 years, suddenly, all citizens will investigate solar as a real and viable alternative to brown outs and service failures, and poor return on their investment for energy costs, thus, they risk paying double the costs of their system over the very same time period, enriching the Utility and losing their opportunity to be energy independent! Scary...

They should also show housewives doing what my mother did, hanging clothes on a clothes line. I do this now, especially this past summer in Texas.
