The article states

'But here is the bottom line. Solar panel makers may have ugly products, but they have a distribution channel and available financing. Until such a channel develops in BIPV, it will be difficult to for the industry to launch.'

Yes beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In order to attract home owners and architects to adopt the technology it is simply a matter of solar PV manufacturers addressing the issue and designing a product to fill the gap. The present manufacturers are the ones best situated to take up BIPV as the have the means, distribution channels and resources.

I have already designed two Built In Solar systems and I'm willing to share them for a small royalty. One has five benefits in total and is easily adaptable to present day technology. The other can be applied when reroofing for domestic hot water or pool heating.

If anyone is interested please leave a message with contact information. These are two of eight patents I want to apply for. Four tools and four solar energy.

For a reference on my problem solving abilities see the wallboarders buddy drywall cutter on youtube. After that, look at all the other drywall cutting tools available.

I can easily state my BIPV solution is as simple, elegant and all encompassing. Guaranteed!

Many other BIPV products have been (some obsolete, some not) on the market, including Photovol by MSK of Japan (since acquired by Suntech), Uni-Solar solar shingles and PVL flexible solar laminates for application on metal roof, EPDM or TPO roof membrane. Alouette Homes of Canada designed and built a net zero energy home with BIPV (PVL laminates)in 2007:

To offset the higher cost of design/engineering/mfg/installation of BIPV vs. conventional rooftop PV, additional incentives should be available as France did with higher FIT rates for BIPV. Non-FIT incentives could include greater LEED points and/or attractive accelerated capital cost allowance (i.e. equipment write-offs for tax purposes). But this would require visionary energy policy.

I agree, that solar panel makers may have ugly products. And they have a distribution channel and available financing. And it is a real problem.
