Good article. However, not economical.

Batteries are a very expensive way to store solar energy ! The batteries only last 5 years and must be replaced. The electrolysis to hydrogen and then fuel cell to electricity for night time use is much cheaper. About 1/3 the cost of the batteries including maintenance. I have done a thorough cost analysis for energy storage and the hydrogen-fuel cell route is the cheapest. We are investing onver $960 million in a 1 Gw solar-hydrogen power plant near San Diego.

$1 per Watt of solar-hydrogen storage sounds wonderful, but I haven't been able to find any information on Dr. Reynolds' proposed project.
Even $4 per Watt of NaS storage is a great deal at this point.

Very nice job, they are constructing the storage facility in Mexico, where cheap labor and land are available, but building the R&D facilities in San Diego.
The solar and wind installations in Mexico are very small and far away from this storage plant so this is actually a project for the US.
Mexicans should look for themselves a little bit more and stop making projects for Uncle Sam...
