Getting an energy efficient EV is popular nowadays. However, charging the EV may be a concern for many parties. I believe in future new market will emerge where solar carports become available at any residential car park to allow EV owners to charge up the EV. This allow convenience.

Right-on Fred! Here in PA, we just installed a PV system in the backyard of the very people you are describing...Eco-conscious, early adopters, and willing to make the investments. The husband will be driving the Nissan "Leaf" soon. Rainwater harvesting, geo-thermal, etc. are all part of this couples philosophy. I like the concept of bringing together various spheres...such as the car-dearlers and the PV installers...unlikely partners...until the "green wave" came along.

Fred, Your list didn't included the baddest plug-in hybrid ever conceived - the Porsche 918 Spyder. For only $630,000, you can have a car that gets 78 mpg and can do 0-100kph in 3.2 seconds! Paul, your guy in PA should ditch the Leaf... this is the car for him!

I've been thinking about combining solar PVs and an EV for some time. Here's my question for the experts: Couldn't you build a much less expensive system if you only used a small PV array to charge the car's batteries? In other words, eliminate the whole inverter apparatus and just go DC to DC.

Thanks,
Wayne

I already combine PV and EV. First I made my home very effivcient and ran it on a 2Kw GRID tied PV array and got credits back most months. 3 BD 2 BA 1600 sq ft. radiant batterie, more insulation, LED lighting, SERR 16.5 lennox heat pump.

Next I have a 10 Kw lithium battery plug in prius, 35 mile all electric range from pluginsupply.com . When I plug it in it takes about 5-6Kw to charge a night off peak. I added 2KW to my PV system . So my 4 KW runs my home and EV.

10 Kw of electric at about $1 buck replaced a gallon of gas at $2.70 or your proces. So the PV pays off about 3 times faster. I call it FIT Feed In Transportation. It helps the utiltiy too. I made energy during Peak hours for them, and I used excess energy they can't store and dump off peak.

PS on the list of EVs they didn't list the Tesla roadster available now at about $100K and the new 2011 Tesla S coming at $50K with uo to 300 miles range.
Also don't forget the smaller more efficient EV like the aptera 2011, Myers Motors DUO late 2010 and many others.
