If your dishwasher is going to wait until there is a good deal on the grid, you will never get them washed unless you do them by hand. Wouldn't it be better and cheaper to use that ten billion to supply houses and businesses with solar panels and upgrade the panels as technology come available? That excess energy can go back into the grid and these out of control utility companies will have to pay you instead of you paying them.

There would be several design options to consider for the future generations of the smart meters and I'm sure they will be practical in use, otherwise there is no need to launch a product that is not fit for its function.

In the otherhand I would think that as the society becomes more socially responsible perhaps people may become good personal electricity managers.
