When you believe in Decentralized Power Distribution, i.e. making electricity where it is needed, Smart Meters do not play a role nor should they. Smart Meters, in my opinion are National Security Risks and customer unfriendly. I truly believe, since most electrical utilities are monopolies, that a great number of people will be forced to do their living late at night (laundry, dishwasher, etc.)since they will only be able to afford electricity at those times. Smart Grids, as it is currently proposed and described, does nothing for the customer of power except charge more for what they used to get for free. See http://www.nogridusa.org/?page_id=85 for more info.

The same is true of those entering the investment field, have a goal in your career and set your mind to reach that goal.

Smart meters gather data, which has great value, even if more exciting smart grid features are slow to materialize. To get the most out of that data, however, we need good analysis. I have more thoughts on that at http://jeffersongoethals.blogspot.com/2010/08/monitoring-energy.html
