Wow...this is polemic. Hardly what I expected based on the post title.

The author seems to argue that the dead zone arises independent of agriculture (or that growing corn for corn ethanol is independent of agriculture), which is counter-logical.

It makes me want to refute each and every "fact" and "perspective" but that would no doubt be a waste of my time.

I'm basically ambivalent about corn ethanol--yes the corn ethanol subsidies are a huge waste...but at least we are wasting the money in America. I remain hopeful that we will quickly transition to cellulostic ethanol, or an alge fuel which doesn't directly place us in the food vs fuel conflict.

I would think "growth energy" would be better off not reminding us about the other gulf environmental calamity while all eyes are fixed on the BP nightmare.

Thank you Daniel for providing a balance to a very imbalanced article. I hope that any reader who stumbles upon this piece understands that Growth Energy represents the interests of corn ethanol, which is in no way proven to be a miracle energy solution deserving of its generous government subsidies.

Here is a good article that more fairly describes the campaign from Growth Energy: http://green.autoblog.com/2010/07/07/slate-worst-part-of-oil-spill-could-be-return-of-big-ethanol/
