Larry Hagman Stars at Intersolar

Day one of Intersolar kicked off for me with a press conference with SolarWorld.  The company announced that it was donating 100kW to the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF).  Bob Freling, executive director of the organization graciously accepted the donation and explained that it would be used to power at least 5 health care centers in Haiti.

In addition, SolarWorld announced its new spokesperson.  Former oil tycoon Larry Hagman (at least he played one on TV) who used to play “JR” on the TV show Dallas is now actively promoting the company, which has a new commercial and a print ad featuring the star.  Hagman not only supports the company as a spokesperson, but he also walks the talk. He has a 100+ kW system on his residence in California that is reportedly the largest residential system in the country.

Hagman said that now is the time for Americans to go solar because it’s clean, has no moving parts and is totally reliable.  He said that he turned to solar after the enormous power outage that happened back in 2003.  Originating in Ohio, the outage caused half of the eastern seaboard to lose power for as many as 3 days.  Hagman went solar after that event, reducing his utility bill from more than $37,000 a year to $13.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Hagman and Freling to talk about their work in solar.  The video is below.

I also sat down with Gal Moyal founder of solar thermal company Free Hot Water.  Moyal discussed certification of solar panels and why it’s important to the industry.  Moyal also said that he thinks it’s likely that legislation or some kind of incentive structure will soon require a certain percentage of solar thermal components be “made in the USA.”  FreeHotWater is currently looking to set up a manufacturing plant for its parts in Sacramento, California.

As usual at renewable energy industry events, the floor is buzzing with activity and excitement.  With 2 more days to go and a lot more interviews to conduct and publish, stay tuned to RenewableEnergyWorld.com for updates.

Update:  the Solar Electric Light Fund just released a song by Steel Pulse to raise money for its work in Haiti.  Check it out at this link.

5 years ago Larry got off his butt and installed solar. He's halfway to his ten year payoff. His power system does not pollute, and will not produce a gulf oil disaster. I too use solar for heat, and electric, plus I have seven wind turbines, and I built all of it from scratch, keeping my costs as low as possible. My power output doesn't even come close to Larry's, but it has reduced my bill a lot. Using only solar to heat my small home in Michigan to 82degrees in the middle of winter is relly something to brag about. More people should get off thier butts and do something instead of complaining or just watching tv. Just my opinion, Dave.

Anonymous,

I know!!! it is sooo selfish to help people in need...right!?

We should spread oil all over the beaches of Haiti if we really wanted to help them out!

Just got the latest marketing pitch from a Chinese manuf. plant of solar thermal. Std. rack is $202 fob Shanghai for a rack of 60 tubes(47mm d.)...58 mm. dia. of 50 tubes is $286.

Certify them and you'll see a flood of cheap solar thermal components and home owner installation 'kits'........in Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears, etc.

Welcome back J.R.!

Larry says solar needs a level playing field. What nonsense. It is so funny watching un-informed celebrities who repeat the marketing material from the manufacturers without the research behind it.

Nice for Larry that he is higher than everyone else and has the sun all the time, and does not have to live down in the Smog with all the other poor people. What nonsense.

The economics of it all just do not work, and no amount of subsidies would make it sensible.

The only reason they go into Haiti is to make themselves look better for helping people and knowing they can make dollars off of other peoples misery.

Playing on citizens guilt and economics are two completely different things.

I had to stop that video and replay it several times over to make sure that I heard the numbers correctly. "The whole thing cost about seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars". Is he insane. It will take more than 20 years for that thing to be paid off. But the worst part is that he will not even pay it, his fellow tax payers will do that for him. Of course other tax payers are not so stupid to put solar on their roofs, without a subsidy.

That is just insane, Larry Hagman takes money from other tax payers to reduce his solar infrastructure, and still it will take him 12 years to pay it off !!! By which time in 10 years from now,the technology will be obsolete and require even more money to upgrade it all.

The economics of it all just makes no sense.

Regardless of energy audits or a $37K yearly bill, Larry did it and he's a well-recognized personality.
Welcome aboard, Major Nelson!

Yikes! Even $3k/month in California seems outlandish. And this guy is a spokesperson? I wonder if he did an energy audit first...

Hi John, Thanks for pointing out my error. I meant to write $37,000 per year, still a hefty bill but not quite as bad.

"his utility bill from more than $37,000 a month to $13". Holy Cow! He was spending enough to buy a new car every MONTH. Must have had an aliminium plant out back.
