Has Solar Become Mainstream?

Friday, July 30, 11:15AM update in red!

Solar panels aren’t usually the first thing that come to mind when you think of “home improvement” or “residential electricity.” But that’s all changing.

No longer is home solar power an option only for those with cash to spare or extreme environmental leanings? Going solar has become easy, affordable, and smart. Solar power purchase agreements and solar leases, like those provided by SunRun, allow homeowners to switch to solar for little or no cost. And there aren’t any addition headaches or hassles, as SunRun takes complete care of the systems. Homeowners don’t have to worry about how their panels are doing – SunRun has that covered.

All homeowners have to do is simply pay monthly for their solar electricity, just like they pay their utilities today. And unlike utilities that can raise their rates at anytime, going solar lets you lock in low, fixed rates today for the next 18 or 20 years.

According to the CPUC, “The growth in third party ownership implies that third party financing may have resolved financial barriers of the high initial cost to expanded growth of PV into the residential market.”

Simply put, solar power is in.

The proof is in the pudding.

  • Good Morning America + solar? This morning, Good Morning America spoke with SunRun’s president, Lynn Jurich, about affordable solar options available for homeowners.  Millions of viewers tuned in to learn how they could, too, go solar. *We just heard from the GMA team that this video/article is the most viewed and e-mailed for Good Morning America in the past 2 days! How's that for solar becoming mainstream??*
  • Earlier this summer, PG&E Corporation (PG&E being one of the nation's largest utilities) announced a $100 million partnership to finance solar power purchase agreements with SunRun.
  • Toll Brothers, one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, has SunRun solar pre-installed on select new home communities.
  • There are almost 73,000 solar photovoltaic installations across the nation, according to NREL’s Open PV Project. That’s over 820 MW of clean solar power.

Has solar become the way of the future? Or is it already the way of the present?

How long will it take for home solar power to become a mainstream choice for Americans? We at SunRun are working as hard as we can to make this a reality now.
