When energy is in a form other than thermal energy, it may be transformed with good or even perfect efficiency, to any other type of energy.

It is understandable that the US does not fully embrace renewable energy considering the political influence of oil over national security. However, Japan has no excuse. The US has big national reserves of oil and coal. Japan has nothing. Therefore, unless they want to get themselves in a position where they have to go to war in order to survive (as they did in WWII), then they need to start a large national project. The biggest natural resource is not garbage but heat. The above comment shows profound ignorance of physics because once something is converted to electricity, it can easily be transformed into other types of energy (i.e. electrolytic transformation of water to hydrogen). Their inexhaustible heat resources need to be exploited and transformed into electricity and a geothermal national project is the only thing which will do the job. Without artificial fertilizer - nothing will grow in Japan very well. Without this - garbage (other than imported garbage) is not possible to obtain. HEAT will be Japan's salvation. I only hope the political leadership wakes up before it is too late.
