Top 10: Ten Largest Solar PV Companies

Oliver Strube

We get quite a few questions here at RenewableEnergyWorld.com about who the big players in each sector of the renewable energy industry are, so we decided to start pulling together some top 10 lists. Here are the top 10 producers of PV for 2011 according to a report from Energy Trend. These numbers will take you right along the supply chain, from polysilicon to module.

Editor's note: These lists were updated from an entry originally posted in 2010. See below for the 2009 figures in the original post. The 2012 numbers do not reflect thin-film production, only polysilicon-based production.

This list was quiet useful but I suppose most of these companies deal with large scale implementation of solar power. Would any of you have an idea for smaller but extremely reliable solar companies which deal with street lights etc. I want to start up the renewable energy program in my city in Pakistan.

In response to Veratha's question, starting with 14TW total grid (2009) electricity demand, in an Excel spreadsheet, try calculating your questions by using an average capactity factor of around .20, and a solar/wind growth rate of 200%/year (hard but not unimaginable or technically impossible?) and see if you get the same results I do: solar and wind could power the entire earth with an energy use growth rate of 2% creating an ultimate global grid demand of 21 TW by 2025, only 15 years from now.

A critical caveat in thinking about this is that climate mitigation must rise to the equivalence of war so the urgency is on a war-like footing (at least WWII). Then, this is not an outlandish thought. We just make collectors and turbines instead of tanks and guns.

Another good idea, we will look at that as well.

Is there a list of the top ten counties who are solar PV manufacturers. Trying to determine the impact of China on the decline of U.S. manufacturing. Thanks.

Whats the total energy demand for the world? what is the energy produced from clean sources? How far do we need to go to reduce global warming?

Ed, Those numbers are estimates, but of production, not capacity. Not sure of Inventux, but I will check it out.

cbdh19 (you really should create an easier to type user name), I am working on a list of top solar integrators. Look for something coming to this blog in the near future.

The Thin Film numbers also look suspect in particular #4 through #13.
More like capacities instead of verified production figures with the exception of the Japanese manufacturers. I would not be surprised to see Inventux make the list.

Do you have a top 10, or, ideally top 20, U.S. solar installers piece somewhere on RenewableEnergyWorld.Com too?

OK, Daniel, you were absolutely right. The 12+GW number was production capacity in 2009, but the actual production/installation of PV was around 7.5-8.5GW depending on what report you believe. I have update the numbers above.

Oliver, Thanks for the list. It made me wonder how well these companies communicate their success to the world (via their websites) and I used your list to do an analysis of the popularity and global reach of these company websites. Here is the link to the post. http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/blog/post/2010/06/competitive-analysis-of-top-solar-pv-company-websites

Daniel, not that you mention it, it does sound high. I think I must have confused production capacity with actual production. I will double check the numbers and fix them if necessary.

Thank you. I love having lists like this!

One question: 12.3GW of actual production (?) in 2009...does that sound a bit high to anyone else?
