For the biggest impact, you'd need influencers who are generally idolized by the American public. It would have to be a "name". For Sports, maybe Derek Jeter or Serena Williams. For Entertainment, Jerry Seinfield or Harrison Ford. For News, Dan Rather or Glenn Beck (unfortunately). For Music, Dolly Parton or Bruce Springsteen.
You get the drift. Find a field, then find the idols. You could even tie them together into some kind of ad campaign, like the Stand Up to Cancer organization.

Great post! The Tipping Point is a great read and sure does apply well to our industry!

Guess I'm a William Dawes type who has been trying to spread the word of solar for thirty years. It does not bother me as there will always be Edisons taking credit for things they didn't invent. The important thing is someone gets the ball rolling so humanity can get out of this dire situation.

Hi All:

Interesting I suppose, but I think an over simplification, in part...
I would not say any of it is off base or wrong... however I might say that a few key items are missing.... Lets look at the transition from vinyl to CD. The change was extremely rapid involving everyone to completely change their base music archive as well as the hardware to play it... not a simple or cheap task. But it happened. Why..??.. Well, there was a substantial improvement in the delivered product, I.E audio quality, etc.. but a very key element was that the players making the vinyl product would be the same players making the CD product. NO major entrenched business entity was displaced by the technology change. So, there was minimal resistance on the production side. Only the sales side resistance (customer) had to be sold. This could be done on the products merits and on the promises it could really deliver. RE, solar included, at the pure product side for the most part can offer nothing that the end customer does not already have. Heat is heat and elect is elect.. The real benefits are disassociated from the application sites on an individual basis, in terms of the action and result, other than an immediate reduction in energy expense. This is mostly de-flavored by the large up front capital expense. So, where are you left..??.. I think everyone can figure that out along with the adoption rate curve....

With the help Thomas Edition technological advances, the world at large is in a position today to gradually phase out incandescent, standard light bulbs and adopt new, more energy efficient means of lighting their environments.

Other analogies worth considering: why did videotape (a heavier, bulkier, lower quality medium) triumph over BetaMax? Why do most of us use PCs, instead of Macs? In both cases, the "losing" technology was hoarded by its inventor, whereas the technology that prevailed was made widely available (via licensing or otherwise).

As for "influencers," Obama needs to put solar panels on the White House (it was a disgrace that Reagan tore down the ones put up by Carter). Even more than that, I would like to see a few leading "conservative" personalities undertake green initiatives. After all, it has been said that only Nixon could go to China.

Q: How Would Thomas Edison Expand the Use of Solar Power?

A: He would block it at every chance. Edison was a cut-throat business man that favored profits and power over the greater good. He would not be in favor of distributed generation cutting in on his centralized generation business model.

"..So fundamentally it doesn't matter HOW MANY people are spreading the message [that solar is cool]…it only matters WHO is spreading that message..."

Think of the marketing success of the Sport Utility Vehicle. We were all sucked in by it, and many readers out there still are. I won't be surprised to see some readers defend why they own one to this day.

They are rarely used for sport or utility. They are station wagons with oversized tires. We bought them because it became cool to own one. We own a Prius now and take it camping instead of the Cherokee.

I'm betting we will see a similar trend with electric cars but most importantly, people will install solar panels to deflect criticism that their electric utility uses coal.

Hi RF:

Not all of us... never had one, never will..
There are people out there who are not sold by indirect advertising...
The day a hot babe will sell me anything that does not line up with my real needs, is when she comes with the product....
