Why would any Americans - or other sensible people - be opposed to domestic, cost-effective and environmentally benign renewable energy?

Ask Ben Nelson why he opposes it. He's one of only two Nebraska voices in the Senate and he is willing to filibuster so that wind, solar, and conservation don't even get discussed.
