OK, I will bite....
Its always for the wrong reason because everything on this planet on any kind of scale is done for money. Only personal acts can/are done without a profit motive. I just jump started a lady's car yesterday at Giant. I didn't do it for money I did it to help her out. BUT, that selfless act required really no material outlay from me, only a little time. The problem is when anything gets BIG, it requires large resources and time and there in pops the currency problem. So ultimately, things are done for money not for the things themselves.... ergo our current mess..... with no solution in sight....

For whatever reasons it choose, let Clean Energy arrive and fast. But let it also come at prices far cheaper than 'dirty' energy.

I think it's a mix -- you have companies entering this space in order to make an honest effort to combat our world's problems, and you have companies looking at it from a pure profit perspective.

Unfortunately, I think we're going to see many more catastrophic events (i.e. war, terrorism, energy shortages, water shortages) before we attack these problems with the all-hands-on deck effort needed....

Totaly true. You can even add the fact that finance will try to find new sectors to put their money to relaunch their crasy wheel !

Alternative energy will come simply because our need for energy is insatiable and, as you commented, fossil sources are finite in supply. All forms of energy will be utilized in the future. It is very doubtful, however, the energy will go down in price, no matter what its' form. With approximately one hundred million new humans added to the planet each year, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize the future implications.

One more thing, oil is much to useful and valuable to be burning in combustion engines. It is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, drugs, clothing, plastics, and etc., etc. Not to mention its need in the continuous waging of wars.

Once FREE ambient energy is tapped at costs less than that from resources that cost money, the folly of burning money will be history.

Bold Predictions. I have a BP thread going on somewhere.

In addition to the realizations mentioned, we'll later than sooner realize there isn't enough RE to power our colossus, extravagant life style. Technology will tremendously help reduce waste, but at a certain point there will be big personal sacrifices that very few are expecting or wanting.

Cheers,

M.

The motto for a sustainable future should be Save All Valuable Energy.

Once it is realized that conservation of energy can reduce energy requirements to a tiny fraction of what we currently squander, supply from RE will be permanently more than adequate without any loss of quality of life.

In the third paragraph of this article Mr. Shields writes "I remain quite optimistic about the migration to renewable energy -- even if it will happen for reasons that are completely independent of the health and safety of the world's people." There is no mention about the health and safety of wind factory victims. I am one of those victims with numerous health issues to my family and myself. Legislators keep believing the lies of wind companies, yet at public hearings victims testimony far out numbers the positives of wind energy. Wind projects keep getting approved with out consideration for human health. Public outcry- Let's put nuclear on the fast track. That is my outcry. It is the most clean source of electricity production, is extremely safe and operates at 99% efficiency while industrial wind turbines are designed to be 27 to 30% efficient, yet often are much less. I would much rather have a 1000 MW nuclear power plant 3/4 of a mile from my home than 5 industrial wind turbines that are expensive, noisy and supply very little electricity. Wind energy is not about saving the earth or quality electricity, it is about money for wind companies and investors. If it were not for giant subsidies and production credits wind energy would be dead because private industry could not develope it and utilities would ignore it.

Do you mean our current standard of living is Unsustainable? We are hooked on a drug called energy... Like a junky when drugs are cheap/plentiful life is good , the dealers get rich. When demand goes up, supply goes down, prices go up and bad things happen. There is no shortage of energy in the USA. The dealers just want to keep us hooked on a dirty drug. No free clean energy for you. If I make my own energy and live within my means...My dealer might accuse me of stealing from him, especially if I teach my neighbors and friends how to be self sufficiend. peace

The governments of this world are complicit in hiding the free clean energy devices which each home and business could have on site. Not wind , not , solar , not nuclear, but something eatheric. If people had unlimited clean energy , to be free from the grid. what then? We would only have to work for a short time to pay for the device. The rest of the time we work to buy machines that run off the power we make . Wake up neo.

My prediction: NUKES Clean energy is rigged to fail as wind and solar will be found too unreliable and expensive. Fossil fuels will be found in short supply and too harmful to the climate. The world's big money men seek a one world government and monopolies with centralized power production fueled by nuclear energy, including city wide cogenerated heating and electric cars. It doesn't matter that it will be costly and made even more expensive by trying to extend limited uranium supplies through reprocessing. A bankrupt population is more controllable! Like the Fox News fanatics claim, just concentrate the waste and store it in a room the size of a gym. If the population revolts, the radioactive waste could leak out to kill them.

One ubiquitous characteristic of addicts is that they will lie and cheat and steal to support their habbit. The enablers are just as determined to keep the spiral going.
Yet, one only has to take a few steps to the left and the whole insane machine goes roaring by. Politicians are often enablers that operate in a comparatively short cycle of deeds to reward. It is called the election cycle. They will not respond to the big picture or the long term because it simply is not in their interests. Change must come from those who see the picture of the world beyond the dreams of the past and the conflict based in it. Old ways simply fall away from disuse as they are seen to be unserving.
Solar energy works right now. It really is that simple.

Git-er-done with the sun!

Craig:
An excellent article that really lays out the truth. For whatever reason it is happening, "point-of-use" power is so sensible, the day will come when power distributors become archaic. The dollars spent on poles, wires, maintenance, fuel, waste, administration, etc., plus power lost in transmission , is astronomical.
The monopolistic attitude providers possess, since they control our way of life, places them in a position similiar to the railroad industry a century ago. Future generations
will surely realize that monetary incentives stymied our energy policies and delayed our escape from the "dark ages."

Great article! I am going to neither agree nor disagree with you point by point. Instead, I will simply let you know that your candor and overall sense of things to comes are refreshingly honest (although somewhat ambiguous, as are most soothsayers) - and for this reason, I will take a closer look at your other post to determine your value to me as an advisor in the RE arena.

BTW: Phil Manke, Take a chill pill dude, your going to give yourself a heart attack with all this pent up anger at the machine.

Hi SL:

Oh yes, you have not heard of the circle wind syndrome.??... It is quite well known. People who work at wind turbine factories, after a period of time, get their eyes stuck going in circles from watching the blades go round during QA testing. It is the strangest thing... its like carpal tunnel for the eyes... they are suppose to be working on a cure.... some type of glasses that spin in the opposite direction I believe....

Too bad Lenny didn't give any real examples of health issues. No offense intended, but it really seems like B.S. What health issues could be unique to a wind farm that wouldn't be a concern is some other industry that OSHA regulates? I could see maybe some unique problems with the large scale fiberglass layup during manufacturer.. maybe? Even then, use proper safety and it isn't a problem.

Anyway, terrible start to your article Craig. Do you lefties have to be such drama queens and continue to bring up G.W.? Some of us would like to forget his nonsense. It's not really much different than what the far right did to the Clinton presidency. Besides, is continuing to make RE a political topic really going to help?

JaertX: Oh, I think RE is in its essense a political topic -- quite independently of whether you or I want it to be. As I'm fond of saying, the moment you take away the subsidies and force everyone to pay the true cost of the energy they're producing and consuming, you'll have ubiquitous RE in about 10 minutes.

Interesting how a person who starts a sensible conversation about energy and GW is automatically labeled lefty. Should a person who automatically cries lefty be automatically be labeled ignorant?

Peak Oil - Irrelevant. Germany developed a process to convert coal to oil during WWII and South Africa commercialized the process. China and the US sit upon the world largest coal reserves and China is constructing coal to oil facilities. The one progect proposed in the US could not obtain financing. The reason given was that oil was not expected to remain above $32/barrel.

Public Outcry - The news media does not report the news equally and fairly, but to someone;s agenda.

Corporate Embrace of Renewables - Industrial giants are embracing solar because of government subsidies and the profits to be made. Subsidies reduce investment risk and California is considering bypassing the permitting process for subsidized projects.

Smart Grid. - A National Energy Plan or Policy is needed before constructing a smart grid.

Maturation of New Technologies.- CSP solar has the potential to lead but won't because of those same incentives that attract industrial giants but stifles innovation. Large mega projects are planned using 80s technology. New Direct Steam Technology is being developed in Germany and China because of the current lack of a US market. There hasn't been any US interest in my technology but much from China and Germany.
