Good post, Ted. I think you missed one motivation, however: Going solar for your kids. I did a tongue in cheek similar post like this a few weeks ago my solar referral/blog site. I can't tell you how many people ask me about rebates in their solar unfriendly state. When I break the news that there isn't going to be any more incentives than the 30% ITC, I've had at least 3 people come back to me and say that they're doing it anyway for their kids. That really moves me, and I'm glad that there are parents out there who aren't leaving the global warming problem to their kids, but are doing something about it: solar.

Here's my post:

I think you're absolutely right about people going solar for their kids. I guess I was lumping that into the 'Environment' reason, but now that you mention it I do think it's a significant enough driver that it deserves its own category. Can I be SolarTed?

The interesting thing is, less Americans are saying the believe climate change is happening, but more of them are buying solar systems. I think the financial/hedge drivers are really pushing things forward....

One other factor that might be considered is personal energy independence. America from its inception was built on the backs of independence-minded pioneers, and I would think that the concept is still strong enough to be a main driver for many Americans. Even if the power is from a solar producing utility, it will be power made in America, by Americans. Awareness of our energy needs and problems has never been more pronounced than over the last eight years. Educating the general public about new advancements in solar technology and how they can be applied in todays world is also of key importance. I found my way to this website, because I was checking up on a statement made by a blogger on Newsvine. That led me to Arizona State,s research section and on to your link, which looked like interesting reading to gain a better understanding of progress being made within the industry. I was quite surprised to read about the size of the Arizona solar land rush. In my opinion, projects undertaken at that level are what this country needs to move forward into a brighter future.

Renewables may be for and with "the" kids. The idea of separate selves and families is the root of the global and local problems in the world. It is more spiritual than most would dare to recognize, but will one day be universal.

I have no family offspring but do the renewable tricks for the "all that is". Someone will benefit. Hopefully, everyone. If I see myself as competing for limited resources in a limited world, I am in a desperate struggle for what? "I" as a body, will not get out of this world alive. That is the natural order. But who sees themselves as an "Unlimited Spirit" of Love will live eternally. This is not religion, but rather "De"-ligion. The ego, the belief in a separate self, is legion, fearful, loud, ubiquitous and believing that attack and punishment will get will get it something it can use. It also knows it depends on your belief you are a body, and seeks your survival, while knowing it cannot get out of this life alive. That is a certain settup for insanity, and we see this played out on the world stage on a daily basis and in miriad ways.

When we choose a new reality of what we see this world is for, the entire universe will change direction and flow toward its source where it is created right now; your mind. When we evolve to the level of accepting this mindset there will be no problems that are not already solved. You may now return to your world of thinking.

Is this list the result of a new survey or just the author's opinion? Are there more recent surveys since Farhar's http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy00osti/28872.pdf

Joel, my insights on the drivers for solar purchase are based on interviews with the heads of marketing and sales for leading solar energy installers. These are people who talk with customers on a daily basis. I'd be interested in hearing of recent research studies to see if they match my conclusions.

I would pile on concerning independence, not just of foreign oil, but also of supply that may seem vulnerable to weather events that could interrupt power delivered over lines or through pipes. Also, if you have a business, you just can't afford to be powered down, more in certain businesses than others. If you have solar with maintained back-up, you could have a competitive advantage.
