What non-US universities offer a renewable energy program in English?

Try McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. There's also York University in Toronto. The Masdar Institute is going to be doing a program with MIT in Abu Dhabi....You might want to check that out too....

Stephen, I just wanted to thank you for your time at the Net Impact Conference. I sat in on the "Making Solar Work" session and it was great to see the passion from the full room. It is an exciting time and the amount of support RE is getting from young professionals is going to help push the industry where it needs to be.

Yes there is passion and interest, what lacks is experience. Learning about renewables on a college level gives you insight to the math and logisitics of installations but it does not give you the skills it takes to install and maintain systems. This can only come from hands on and practical training. Maybe they should have courses like walking on roofs 101, working with wires and pipes 101 etc. It is these skills. along with the book skills, that allow systems to be installed correctly and safely.

Thanks, Collin. I thought the session was a lot of fun. I was also struck by the quality of questions I heard from people during and after the sessions....

I'm very excited by all the up-and-coming talent in this industry!

To Thomas: I agree that newcomers lack experience -- but isn't that the way it is in every industry? A lot of universities out there are offering lots of hands on experience. It's not just about books anymore.....

- Imperial College London (where I did my MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures - good program, interdisciplinary, and 1 year)
- TU Delft, U of Edinburgh, a bunch of German universities.
Europe has great courses in RE.

Stephen,

Love the post. I just referred to it in a blog post title '9 places to find a job in RE energy" here: http://thegreenlightdistrikt.com/2009/12/11/9-places-to-find-a-job-in-renewable-energy/

I think it's great that the industry has captured the illusive 'cool' quality that attracts young people, entrepreneurs, and career changers. People LOVE to say they work in the industry.

I liked your podcast a couple months ago about the wind turbines on Vinalhaven in Maine. I'm from Maine and went on a sailing trip a couple weeks back in Penobscot Bay and saywthat turbines in action. They are beautiful!

I do interviews for my blog and would love to connect. What's the best way to get in contact? Do you use twitter?

Chris

Hi Stephen - I couldn't have stated this better myself, congratulations on publically expressing what I have been sharing with folks for quite a while. It was good to see you again in action at the Net Impact conference. As you know, I was Moderator of the "Opportunities in Wind Energy" panel. Like you, we were simply mobbed by students and professionals alike. As an Executive Search Consultant, everywhere I go, naturally I am peppered with career changing inquiries (as I have done for over 20 years) and I do continue to try my best. I also give our distinguished panelists much credit for lending their ear and in every case, kindly offering useful advise.

Keep up the great work, Stephen!
