Sanyo To Build New Solar Ingot & Wafer Production Plant

San Diego, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

Sanyo North America Corporation has announced its decision to construct a new plant that will manufacture silicon ingots and solar wafers. The plant will be located at the Salem Renewable Energy and Technology Park in Salem, Oregon.

To increase ingot and wafer production, a fundamental part of the solar cell, the second plant in the U.S. will be constructed and organized by a new company, Sanyo Solar of Oregon LLC.

The plant is expected to begin operations in October 2009 and be at full operation by April 2010. The initial production capacity of the facility will be approximately 70 megawatts (MW). The plant will represent an investment of approximately US $80 million.

Sanyo said that in addition to building this new facility it plans to augment its existing facilities with new equipment. The company also has more new facilities in planning for future growth in response to market demand. The company plans to reach annual global production capacity of at least 600 MW by FY 2010.

I assume your planning to grow crysyalline silicon ? What cell efficiency will this material produce? Will this material be available to fabricate panels ? Thank you for your reply Frank

This news is very exciting ! I am a commercial consultant for SolarCity, covering the Willamette Valley region of Oregon, as well as Bend/Redmond and south to the California border. Sanyo makes a great panel and it will just add more credibility and energy to the developing solar market in the Pacific NW. Now, we just need to get the incentives favored by our legislators and mutually, work toward a national and state supported feed-in tariff as Germany has done. That, will put a lot of people to work in the growing renewables sector - and have a huge impact on climate change.
