Meanwhile, BOWDOIN COLLEGE, will be opening a huge new hockey area w/ 1,900 car parking lot; massive roof and enormous refrigeration units...but they buy 'green' energy, so I guess it's o.k.!

MOST IMPRESSIVE ARTICLE...I hope the environmental media covers the many alt. energy appliances that have been installed. HYENERGY has their free-standing street lamps powered by small wind turbines, solar panels that keep a battery topped off.

Who knows what other 'small' pieces of technology are tucked among the big ticket items we want to know about.

I'm intrigued by the dual PV/Thermal solar panels from Canada...if it works in Canada it should work in Maine.

While China needs her coal fired power stations to power her incredible development, she is obviously very much aware of the down side of fossil fuels. Not having the extensive power network of the West, she is idealy placed to power up with renewables just as fast as she can. If the west doesn't get a move on we will all be driving Chinese electric cars before long. Remember when the thought of driving a Japanese car was a real joke. It didn't remain a joke for long.

As a counterpoint, don't let the fluff overwhelm you. China has invested billions is surveillance equipment under the guise of Olympic Security. They are not just surveiling the olympic venues however, but everything else under the sun and moon. The atmosphere besides being polluted, probably to the point where collecting solar energy would not be very efficient, is even more repressive than it was.

To paraphrase one commentator for the opening ceremonies of the OLYMPICS last night, the spectacular array of presentations was so impressive, 'they can retire the trophy'.

They pulled off a dazzling night...the huge LED 'scroll' that dancers would draw on, was amazing.

I suggest you all, in stead of being hyper critical; take a very long look at what CHINA has accomplished....I'm not easily impressed...and I though CIRQUE SOLIEL was great....The Chinese easily relegated them to a distant second place!

It is encouraging to note, that green technology is developing. However everyone should have been panicking about environment issues 20 years ago.

A mistake in "Suntech Power of Wuxi, Zhejiang Province provided the 130 kW solar system for the Olympic Stadium, also known as the "Bird's Nest."". Wuxi is a city located in Jiangsu Province, rather than Zhejiang!

It is a great effort , and should be given lot of publicity which will bring awareness to all the persons busy in the field of renewable energy .Because of cost many government bodies avoid the development of renewable energy.

66KW not MW "Canadian Solar provided 66 megawatts (MW) of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) for the lampposts along Olympic Boulevard."

Yes, the huge LED 'scroll' is a great shining point of the ceremonies, it conbain the LED technology with the Chinese painting.
LED using is another green point for the Olmpics, Beijing has done a lot for green, as a host to the world.
