Sopogy Releases SopoNova 4

San Jose, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

Sopogy unveiled its newest Micro Parabolic Trough technology called "SopoNova 4 at Intersolar North America 2008 in San Francisco, California.

“Since 2002, Sopogy has been inventing, testing and validating our unique MicroCSP technologies. SopoNova 4 marks our 40th version of technology improvement. We’ve learned many valuable lessons through our six years of research and development and incorporated those lessons into our most efficient and lowest cost product yet. In SopoNova 4 we’ve incorporated form and function with a visually appealing yet robust and cost effective concentrating solar collector,” said Darren Kimura, president and CEO of Sopogy.

The Sopogy MicroCSP solar collector system is concentrating panel that was modeled after the successful installation of concentrating panels in the Mojave Desert in the mid 1980’s. The product design includes modularity, customized tracking, efficient shipping, storm protection, and automatic operation. The heat generated by the concentrator can be used to power turbines to create electricity or used directly for industrial process heating and solar cooling. The technology captures cost efficiencies by operating in lower temperatures which enable general contractor installation, low cost thermal energy storage and is facility safe.

To see Al Yuen PhD, director of corporate development for Sopogy discuss the product launch and the company's business, play the video below.

SopoNova 4 is currently available in the United States and through select distributors internationally. For more information about SopoNova 4, click here.

When you said "small" I thought you meant really small - like residetial size (probably around 5kW0. A modular unit that size could provide energy for air conditioning and hot water. Here in California people have electric bills of $300-400 duning the summer. A lot of them would welcome getting off the grid during "peak" hours.

At a brief glance, it seems that this version/generation has epochal improvements for PTC sector as follows:

- More capscrews less welding brings high assembly and transport advantages.
- It's total weight (68 kg.) is very suitable for roof-applications.
- Total collecting area (5.574 sq.mt.) is really small according to other products.

But beside these I believe that there are some issues that have to be improved like the rotating system (by implying motor & reduction gear instead of rope/wire)

These are so important issues for Solar Cooling, Solar Air-conditioning, Process steam generation and Process heating applications especially for Mediterranean & Gulf countries like Turkey, Spain, Cyprus, UAE, Morocco etc.

Because the main problems like lack of available space and roof-load that we've been encountering with our customers for industrial facilities and Hotels in the region could easily be solved with this version.

Congratulations SOPOGY. I wish that I could have seen this product and talk in detail at Inter Solar-2008 –Munich. But SOPOGY was not there and we were not at the Inter Solar-2008-North America. May be next time...
