W. Hughes is quite correct. The grid's control centers are already using sophisticated controls to balance variable loads throughout the day. Variable supply is simply the other side of the same coin, and can be adjusted by the same methods. This is not a major concern for utilities, since they presently have the systems and software in place to cope with this scenario.

As more and more wind turbines, solar electric and tidal energy come on line there will be times when supply exceeds demand. At this point we enter the realm of demand balancing. Signals can be sent to customers who can utilize intermitent power to turn on their loads. These can include water heating, electric car charging, Hydrogen and Oxygen generation and so forth. Customers with a tank of hot water or a charged car will then not be using power when the excess situation passes. The trick is to size the renewables to supply the average power need. This, of course means that sometimes power generation will be in excess and sometimes in deficit. The incentive for this system to work is the price of intermitent power when compared to power on demand.
