Airtricity Finalizes 209-MW Wind Project in Texas

$300,000,000 facility will provide power to TXU.
Sweetwater, Texas [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

Airtricity announced the construction of its largest wind farm to date: The 209-megawatt (MW) Roscoe Wind Farm will provide power to TXU Wholesale, a subsidiary of TXU Corp., in a five-year sales contract. When complete, the project area will stretch into three counties and cover nearly 30,000 acres.

The Roscoe Wind Farm, which is scheduled for completion by the end of the year, will help Texas meet its renewable energy goal of 5,000 new megawatts of its power from renewable sources by 2015. In 2006, Texas became the nation's leader in installed wind capacity.

"As electricity demand and natural gas prices continue to rise," said Airtricity North America CEO Declan Flanagan, "policymakers and businesses like TXU are seeing the benefit of tapping into Texas's vast wind energy resource."

The Roscoe Wind Farm, Airtricity's third Texas project, will use 209 1-MW Mitsubishi 1000A turbines. Airtricity's fourth Texas wind farm, the 126-MW Champion project, recently commenced construction five miles from the Roscoe site. By the end of this year, Airtricity will operate 550 MW of wind power in Texas; the company is also currently constructing a project in western New York.

Do we know the price per kw which TXU will be paying for this wind power? If the sales price can justify the capital cost, considering the variability of wind, this could be an excellent example of renewable energy.
