Lyngby, Denmark [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

Danish industrialist Haldor Topsoe A/S is to invest DKK 100 million (US$ 17 million) into its fuel cell development program, in which Riso National Laboratory is also participating.

The new subsidiary Topsoe Fuel Cell is specifically for pilot production of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) at the firm's main location in Lyngby north of Copenhagen.

Eventually, plans include a full-scale plant, slated to come online in 2010.

"If things go according to plan, we expect to achieve revenues of DKK 1-2 billion [US$176 million to 352 million], or perhaps even more, in 2015," said Claus Olsen, Topsoe Fuel Cell's managing director. By that time, the total fuel cell market in Europe and North America is expected to be worth approximately DKK 15 billion (USD 2.6 billion).

Haldor Topsoe is a supplier of catalysts needed to produce ammonia, methanol, formaldehyde, sulphuric acid and hydrogen -- the latter being the primary feedstock for fuel cells.
