Super Bowl XLI Will Use 100% Renewable Energy RECs

Sources are Florida-generated solar and bioenergy.
New York [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

Super Bowl XLI and the NFL Experience Football Theme Park will both be 100% renewable energy events this year.

"The NFL has taken a leadership role in bringing energy independence and environmental stewardship to the state."

-- Vinnie Fugere, Sterling Planet, NFL client manager

Using renewable energy certificates (RECs), Sterling Planet and the FPL Sunshine Energy program for business customers will provide Florida- generated renewable energy from solar and bioenergy sources in the name of Dolphin Stadium, the NFL and the South Florida Super Bowl XLI Host Committee.

"The partnership between the NFL Environmental Program, Sterling Planet and FPL's Sunshine Energy(R) program will leave a lasting legacy in Florida," said Vinnie Fugere, Sterling Planet's client manager for the NFL. "The NFL has taken a leadership role in bringing energy independence and environmental stewardship to the state."

Long after Super Bowl XLI, the commitment to clean, renewable energy at Dolphin Stadium will endure. The event precedes the launch of FPL's Sunshine Energy program to business customers, who can begin enrollment April 1, 2007.

Sunshine Energy will give FPL's business customers an opportunity to purchase renewable energy on an ongoing basis. FPL will earmark proceeds from the program for the creation of new, renewable energy resources within Florida.

This will be the coolest year and bring in a new means of powering the future.
Good job NFL , Sterling planet , FPL Sunshine Energy , and special thanks to Vinnie Fugere.
You are implanting the fans with the best Ideas ever. Now if the commercials will implant the same Ideas and developments. To show a blind industry how to develope a cleener enviroment for the children to go on and to feel safe.

The purchase of renewable energy certificates enables project developers to generate financial resources necessary to finance projects which would never get off the ground otherwise. It's where the "metal meets the meat" in the war against emmissions and empowers consumers to put their money where their mouth is by making a solid commitment to green energy projects. It's a way to vote, a way to be involved, a way to increase public awareness, and it most certainly reduces carbon dioxide and other emissions. I'm sure a call to Sterling Planet would dispel any question about the generation methods and open an opportunity for positive participation instead of rhetorical activism. The only thing that doesn't pass the smell test here is why it's taken so long for REC's to arrive in main pop culture or why we as consumers don't demand that the oil companies purchase an REC for every gallon of oil produced retroactive to the first gallon sold.

Ok but why are they hiding their methods of generating this power?

This reads like carbon trading and it means they are supposably making less green house gas by buying these REC's. Hum this doesn't pass the smell test.
They are not going green they are quasi green.
"Carbon trading" is not removing carbon from the air folks, it is not saving our environment, and it needs to be shown the door!

REC's are a get out of jail free card for polluters to buy so they can keep on polluting using the cleanness sold by purchasers of solar panels. It's better than nothing while Governments are making up their minds to issue bonds to stimulate the renewable industry.

Can anyone give me a quick education on REC's.

I must agree with Draq. Presently, RECs are rather like taxing income from bank robberies - not a terribly effective deterrent. I will admit that in theory it is a step in the right direction, but if we're to provide financial incentive to "go green" we need to put more teeth in it.

Perhaps the answer lies in the magnitude and allocation of the RECs to better level the subsidy playing field.

A Renewable Energy Certificate or REC is the calculated environmental component of renewable energy. It is usually associated with electricity production from a renewable source. In the case of Superbowl XLI it represents a calculation of each KW of power used to produce the event. The assumption is that even though the actual electricity being used at the superbowl comes from a nonrenewable source, the voluntary purchase of the REC guarantees that an equal amount of power is generated from a renewable source and by comparison, that renewable power source emits less carbon dioxide and therefore displaces the source being used. The renewable energy certificates are used by the developer or owner of the renewable power source to generate revenue and finance renewable energy sources. Very simply, the more the public participates through the voluntary purchase of RECs, the more renewable energy systems will develop and a net reduction of CO2 emissions will result.
