Agreement to Develop Wave Power Park in Oregon

Portland, Oregon [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc (OPT) and Pacific Northwest Generating Cooperative (PNGC Power) have signed an agreement to work cooperatively on the development of the Reedsport OPT Wave Park in Douglas County, Oregon.

OPT expects to install its ocean-tested PowerBuoy systems -- initially generating a total of 2 megawatts (MW) -- approximately 2.5 miles off the coast at a depth of 50 meters. OPT has been issued a preliminary permit by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for up to 50 MW of capacity at the site, and plans to develop, own and operate the initial 2 MW wave power park.

In addition to supporting OPT in the permitting process and power transmission for the project, PNGC Power will work cooperatively with OPT to pursue a power purchase agreement (PPA), under which PNGC Power would purchase the electrical energy output of the 2 MW wave power park from OPT. PNGC Power plans to provide a significant portion of the funds required to fabricate and install the first PowerBuoy at the Reedsport site.

Further, PNGC Power will provide its expertise regarding grid interconnection and its experience in meeting the standards of the Bonneville Power Administration, which operates much of the region's power system.

God's Gift To Us

Wave power means pay power when it comes to energy extraction,
God's gift to use whenever we choose for power grid impaction,
For ever since the world was born waves jousted with the shore,
To spend their force upon the rocks and into coastlines bore,
But now our shock absorber buoys will siphon off some power,
Convert it to electricity for us to use each hour,
We thank God for this precious gift of nature that He gave,
All nations soon will now consume the power of the wave.

I think wave energy has great potential and I'm glad OPT is still making head way. It'll be nice to get some more empirical data from this and hopefully it'll convince people of the viability of wave energy.

The concept of wave power has been with us for a long time, yet it is only recently that we have decided to use this free source of energy for the good of our country: I know that the so called experts will say that it was the economics which prevented wave power being used in the past, but that excuse is as erroneous as the people who make it: Anyway, it is certainly economics which is now the cause of its use, because of the oil situation: So much for our far sighted planners of tomorrow: Well, at least we have made a start at last, so all we need to do now is to make sure we dont lag behind the rest of the world in renewable energy, yet it seems that we already are lagging far behind parts of Europe: Our loss will be Europes gain if we dont get a move on:
