Renewable Energy Focus of U.S. Presidential Directive

Washington, DC [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

President George W. Bush's recent Executive Order, issued on January 24, institutes new guidance for energy efficiency, use of renewable energy and reduction of environmental impact throughout the federal government.

The President's executive order calls upon all federal agencies to ... "ensure that at least half of the statutorily required renewable energy consumed by the agency in a fiscal year comes from new renewable sources, and to the extent feasible, the agency implements renewable energy generation projects on agency property for agency use."

The President's executive order calls upon all federal agencies to "improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions of the agency, through reduction of energy intensity by 3% annually through the end of fiscal year 2015, or 30% by the end of fiscal year 2015, relative to the baseline of the agency's energy use in fiscal year 2003" and "ensure that at least half of the statutorily required renewable energy consumed by the agency in a fiscal year comes from new renewable sources, and to the extent feasible, the agency implements renewable energy generation projects on agency property for agency use."

The order also calls for agencies to reduce fleet fuel consumption by 2% annually through fiscal year 2015, increase use of non-petroleum fuels by 10% annually and use plug-in hybrid vehicles when they are commercially available and reasonably priced, as well as consider the highest energy efficiency and environmental standards when purchasing new electronics.

A different view of Bush's policies:

Why are 100 plus new dirty coal fired power plants on the drawing board?

"Clean coal" is a research project and will not start to produce power till 2020.

Why is the US giving $9 Billion in subsidies to the Nuclear industry?

Why is the US planning to give $6 Billion in tax breaks to big oil?

The US needs 500,000 MW of new solar and wind power to replace coal. We are at about 2% of that level and need incentives to prime the pump for Concentrating thermal solar with storage on a utility scale.

Where are the mandatory fuel economy standards to reduce emissions NOW?

Why are we spending $290 Billion per year for foreign oil? We need incentives for plugin electric vehicles which will drastically reduce our oil needs and have zero emissions when recharged by solar power from the grid

The Bush plan is an inadequate disaster and going in the wrong direction!

Bush looks pretty good in renewable energy in policy and results. In addition to this:
- He installed geothermal system and catches rainwater at Crawford Ranch
- As governor in 1999, Texas passed the first successful state renewable portfolio standard (2000 MW by 2009) that has propelled TX to #1 in wind
- 2005 EPAct's renewable fuels standard (7.5 billion gallons by 2012)
- The recent state of the address call for 35 billion gallons of renewable fuel by 2017
- US moved to #1 in world production capacity of ethanol in 2005
- US was #1 in new wind installation capacity in 2005
Effort and results are impressive.
