80 Members of Congress Pen Letter to President Bush to Fund Renewable Energy

The letter closes: "We look forward to working with you on this important endeavor."

Eighty Members of the U.S. House of Representatives took time this week to send a letter to President Bush seeking substantially higher funding levels for renewable energy and energy efficiency in the White House's Fiscal Year 2008 (FY'08) budget request for the U.S. Department of Energy.

In particular, the letter calls for full funding of the advanced hydropower program and geothermal power programs as well as the biomass/biofuels, wind, and solar programs in addition to the buildings, industry, and vehicles efficiency programs.

Circulated by Representatives Mark Udall (D-CO) and Zach Wamp (R-TN), the letter notes that "renewable energy and energy efficiency can have the most immediate and longest lasting positive effect on energy availability, stable prices, and greenhouse gas emissions."

Consequently, it urges the Administration to "develop a request that fully funds the renewable energy and energy efficiency programs in the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal agencies at the levels authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 2005."

In particular, the letter calls for full funding of the advanced hydropower program and geothermal power programs as well as the biomass/biofuels, wind, and solar programs in addition to the buildings, industry, and vehicles efficiency programs.

The signers conclude that "a budget request that fully funds the range of federal sustainable energy programs will go a long way toward meeting the nation's goals of reducing energy imports and controlling energy prices while also improving the economy, national and homeland security, and the environment and public health."

I wonder if Bush will listen to this, as he doesn't seem inclined to listen to anybody else. i.e. ISG, + the vast majority of the planet's population........sigh!

Take a look at the president's speach in St. Louis this fall. He is surprisingly pro-renewables and increasingly pro energy efficiency.

So this letter is great encouragement!

Too bad our president wants us to get addicted to imported natural gas and considers nuclear power renewable!

This is a good idea and effort. It's just too bad that Bush is not interested in any of the main goals: reducing oil imports, stable prices, fewer greenhouse gases, etc.

Maybe if they had said/highlighted it might help the U.S. farm industry and create other jobs it might make a small bulb go off in his head that said "Hey, that might help Republicans get re-elected in '08" it might have had a chance.

Still, it will be on the record that these 80 people supported it, despite what he does.

I agree, it will be a very useful service to its readers for REA to post a list of signers to this letter with State & Party, as well as the letter itself. A working link to this list and the letter will certainly suffice.

by name, State & Party, that signed the letter to President Bush ?

Will President Bush pay heed today to this most important need we pray,
Hydro, Geo, wind and solar all require his sharp attention,
Buildings, vehicles, bio fuels and many others need we mention?
Is President Bush on line? If so it would be fine,
That he could work with Congress well and not with words just "show and tell",
Our country needs to move ahead and good decisions to take instead,
By granting funds to these technologies we prepare for energy eventualities,
Signing new laws as they go, with pen in hand Congress will show,
The signers of the Bill of Rights they take their place with true insight,
Proud to be leaders with good foresight and intelligence we know.
