San Francisco Plans Green Power Community on Former Naval Shipyard

San Francisco, California [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

San Francisco's first neighborhood powered entirely by clean, renewable energy is planned for a 93-acre parcel at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard by collaboration between San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and Lennar BVHP.

"Our growing portfolio of clean hydropower, solar and other renewable energies allows us to continue powering the City's vital municipal services."

-- Susan Leal, SFPUC, general manager

Construction by Lennar BVHP of more than 1,600 new residential units and 300,000 square feet of commercial and retail space is set to begin on the site under a plan in which the SFPUC will deliver reliable, 100% renewable and cost-competitive power through its extensive hydropower, solar and other renewable energy generation projects.

Initially, the Green Power Community at Hunters Point will be powered by the SFPUC's extensive hydro and solar power portfolio. Under the plan, the SFPUC will ensure that rates charged to residents and businesses are the same or lower than current retail and commercial electric rates. As new technologies, such as thin-film solar, fuel cell and tidal energy, become available commercially, this and other future Green Power Communities will be in line for power from these programs.

The SFPUC currently provides reliable, clean, reasonably priced power to many of San Francisco's vital public services and facilities, more than 20,000 streetlights, a large municipal rooftop solar facility, and projects in operation or in the works at a wastewater treatment plant, recycling facility and the airport.

"San Franciscans already rely on the water and power we deliver every day," said SFPUC General Manager Susan Leal. "Our growing portfolio of clean hydropower, solar and other renewable energies allows us to continue powering the City's vital municipal services and bring clean, reliable, affordable energy to the new neighborhood at Hunters Point."

Lennar is a Florida-based mega condo-developer which the City of San Francisco, as in our Mayor and Supervisors, gave a free chunk of our Superfund Shipyard (the highly toxic and radioactive former Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard) to build condos on. And now the City's moneyed elites and politicians want to give our taxes to Lennar, a corporation that just "bought 37 communities in San Diego, Orange Country, and Phoenix" to light up their Bayview condos, whose windows will open on Parcel E, the hottest hot spot--as in radioactive---in the whole Superfund Shipyard, which the Navy gave back to us---the citizens of San Francisco--because it cannot possibly clean it up.

Laurence Pelosi, step-son of Nancy, and cousin of Mayor Gavin Newsom, resigned as an Executive V.P. of Lennar to manage Gavin Newsome's first mayoral campaign. Shortly thereafter, the Mayor and Supes gave Lennar its free building site and now its going to give---as in make us pay---for Lennar's green power.
