"Not only is the reduction of 40 percent one of the largest in the private sector, it is global in scope. As important, Weyerhaeuser is doing this in a way that makes a permanent difference -- making changes in how their facilities operate."

-- onathan Lash, president of the World Resources Institute.

This report is referring to Weyerhaeuser's demonstration of black liquor gasification (BLG). BLG is the potential to replace recovery boilers in about 100 pulp and paper mills in the U.S. and convert them from slight energy users to energy or biofuel producers.

Unlike the enzymatic cellulosic ethanol R&D, BLG does not require miracles to be successful, and could make a commerical impact in five years.

Weyerhaeuser, uses this resource to help energy and environment. We miss similar opportunities outside the timber industry.

Public and private facilities fueled by chipped wood have decades of success here and abroad. In development leader Austria, forestry and energy officials improve forests using wood to displace fossil fuel. Clean efficient heat, cooling and CHP at competitive prices with less greenhouse gas and more jobs result.

Vast areas of U.S. timber everywhere need work. Local small scale wood-energy use can help people, forests and air quality. DOE funds research, but with exceptions, has lowered support for other biomass work. Ag. Undersecretary Mark Rey says cellulosic ethanol studies target lower forest fire risk. Alcohol from small poor quality trees can, if successful, help meet energy needs; its value may cover process and freight costs. Vital research, but security, budgets, forests and environment need committed effort to installations in the here and now.
