"With the New Jersey PowerBuoy successfully deployed and producing power, we are commencing discussions with certain utilities with a view to the next phase of scale-up to a megawatt-level power station."

One embodiment of the OPT device appears to take the form of a permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG) in which an inductive coil and a PM are moved past one another by the force of the passing waves so as to produce an electric current that is transmitted to shore via bottom cables (see US patents 7,168,532 and 7,323,790). Annette von Jouanne of Oregon is also active in R+D of this type of wave energy converters.

R.S. Kafka patented the PMLG wave energy converter in 1965 (#3,362,336) and thus the PMLG wave energy converter concept is widely know to those of ordinary skill in the art at present.

A somewhat related magnetic wave energy concept has been developed by the SARA company... "SARA has developed a cost-effective solution to energy extraction from ocean waves that is based on the company's patented magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) generator (US Patents 7,166,927 & 5,136,173)." Fans of the Hunt For Red October will enjoy this concept which, as it relates to wave energy, dates back to at least the mid 1970s.

One of wave energy converters was presented at Oak Ridge National Energy in April 2008 as the Johns Hopkins University entry for the I2P contest. This patent-pending "broken wave energy converter" taps naturally-concentrated wave energy in the form of rip and long-shore currents for a number of useful applications including coastal safety, erosion control and of course power production.
